When Dae Haeng Kun Sunim speaks of our "foundation," our "root," or our "inherent nature," I believe this is her version of the Buddha’s admonition that man ‘take refuge in himself.’
I do not mean that Venrable Monk Dae Haeng decided to reiterate the Buddha’s words another way, simply to restate the Buddha’s messge while suggesting her own authorship. I mean that it has the same or similar meaning. I believe she came to this conclusion herself, from what I read in No River./> When I was first exposed to Kun Sunim’s teachings, I felt that she was creating a new religion, based on trusting oneself, but that is partially because I had not read the statement of the Buddha wherein he said not to trust in any god, but in oneself.
